Dra. Janneth Lomas: A Vocation to Serving Visual Health

Janneth treats conditions such as pterygium, cataracts, and keratoconus, and performs refractive surgeries to correct myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. What she enjoys most about her profession is the ability to help people. She feels motivated by restoring vision to patients who cannot see, through surgery.

Born in Loja, her passion for medicine began in childhood, influenced by her family, most of whom are doctors. This early influence, along with her dedication to service, led her to pursue a career in medicine.

Education and Career
She studied general medicine at the National University of Loja and specialized in ophthalmic surgery at the Central University of Ecuador. She further expanded her knowledge in glaucoma with training at the Sampaolesi Center in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and at the Ear and Infirmary Hospital at Mount Sinai in New York, USA.

Janneth has also served as a university professor at various institutions, including the Metropolitan University in Quito in the Faculty of Optometry, the National University of Chimborazo in the Faculty of Medicine, the Private Technical University of Loja in the School of Medicine, and the National University of Loja in the Faculty of Medicine.

In her clinical practice, Janeth has worked in various public and private sector institutions. In Quito, she served as an ophthalmologist at the Finland Foundation for Eyes. In Loja, she has worked at the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security (IESS) and the UTPL Hospital, now known as Santa Inés Hospital. Currently, she works at her clinic, Visualis Optical and Ophthalmological Services, in Loja.

Vocation and Service
At the beginning of her career, finding a balance between her professional and personal life was challenging, especially while working in the public sector. However, over time, she managed to organize her life to dedicate more time to her family while maintaining her professional commitment. Now, working in the private sector, she has found a way to balance her time between work and family life, allowing her to share "valuable moments" with her husband and daughters.

Hobbies
Outside of her professional life, Janneth is married to Diego Patiño Izquierdo, a criminal lawyer, with whom she enjoys spending time with her family. She also enjoys cooking, taking walks, and organizing trips. She is an avid reader of self-help and personal development books, which she finds inspiring for both herself and her patients.

"Sometimes, in addition to treating vision ailments, one also offers advice and words of encouragement to patients," she adds.

Community Commitment
Janneth is currently an active member of the Rotary Club of Loja, an organization dedicated to helping the most needy sectors of the city and province of Loja. This commitment to community service complements her work, allowing her to contribute to the well-being of her community beyond her clinic.

For Janneth, people must have a clear direction in life and pursue their dreams with passion. "It's important to work on something you are passionate about so that it doesn't feel like an obligation," she says.
