Wildfire in Quilanga Under Control, But Nearby Flames Persist
In addition to the environmental destruction, the fire claimed the lives of 6,010 animals, including 6,000 chickens and 10 cattle. It also led to the evacuation of 207 people, the destruction of three homes, damage to 17 others, and left three people injured. The area’s poultry farm and domestic animals of several families suffered significant losses.
The forest fire in Quilanga, Loja Province, has been controlled after 12 days of intense efforts, affecting 7,600 hectares. However, hotspots remain in surrounding areas, according to local authorities.
While the fire is under control in Quilanga, firefighters and military personnel continue to work on extinguishing and monitoring critical areas to prevent any flare-ups. Helicopters equipped with Bambi Buckets from Peru are deployed in key zones, including Santa Rosa, El Limón, El Sauce, La Libertad, and Naranjito in Quilanga, as well as in Quinara and Vilcabamba in Loja. These helicopters have been conducting multiple water drops to ensure the complete elimination of the fire.
The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (INAMHI) has issued forecasts warning of possible new hotspots in southern Loja Province, particularly along the border of Gonzanamá and Paltas and in Quilanga, between September 3 and 5. These conditions could hinder efforts to control the fire, prompting local authorities to remain on high alert.
