Loja Celebrates with Pilgrim Nights and Devotion to "La Churonita"

Since Sunday, September 1st, Loja has been illuminated with traditional fireworks displays and cultural activities in honor of the Virgen del Cisne, affectionately known as "La Churonita." These celebrations, which began with a burst of colorful lights in the central plaza, will continue through September 8th, culminating in the Feast of the Nativity of Mary.

Central Park has become a gathering spot for thousands of devout participants, driven by their faith in the Virgen del Cisne. Each evening features the "quema de castillos," a breathtaking fireworks spectacle that symbolizes the offerings of the faithful to the Virgin. One or more fireworks displays are lit each night, filling the sky with explosions of light and color that captivate both locals and visitors.

Father William Arteaga, the parish priest of El Sagrario, emphasized the sense of unity and devotion present during these days. "We are experiencing a special time, with massive participation reminiscent of the pre-COVID era. It is a clear testament that faith in the Virgen del Cisne remains strong among the people of Loja and all who join this tradition," he stated. He also stressed the importance of safety and respect, noting that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure the events proceed smoothly.

Starting Wednesday, September 4th, the Pilgrim Nights are set to become one of the most anticipated highlights of the week. These nights, which run through September 8th, will feature music, dances, and parades organized by various local institutions, including the Fair Corporation, Banco Codesarrollo, and the Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja (UTPL). These events not only pay tribute to the Virgen del Cisne but also provide an opportunity for the people of Loja to celebrate their culture and traditions in a festive community setting.

In terms of safety, a contingency plan has been implemented in coordination with the National Police and Fire Department to ensure all activities, especially the fireworks displays, are conducted safely. Barricades have been set up around the cathedral to prevent attendees from getting too close to the fireworks during the displays. "We want everyone to enjoy this celebration, but we also want them to do so safely," Father Arteaga emphasized.
